Why Sleep Matters
Sleep Is Not Optional for Brain Health
Sleep is when your brain does its most important maintenance work. Chronic sleep disruption affects virtually every system your brain depends on:
- •Memory consolidation happens during sleep — your brain processes and stores what you learned during the day
- •Emotional regulation is deeply tied to sleep — poor sleep amplifies anxiety, irritability, and emotional reactivity
- •Focus, attention, and processing speed all decline significantly with disrupted sleep
- •Chronic sleep deprivation increases risk for depression, anxiety, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline
- •Sleep is when your brain clears metabolic waste products — including proteins linked to neurodegenerative disease
- •For people in treatment for mental health conditions, poor sleep can undermine the benefits of therapy, medication, and neurofeedback

Signs Your Sleep May Be Disrupted
Many people have sleep disorders without knowing it. Common signs include:
- •Waking unrefreshed no matter how many hours you sleep
- •Snoring, gasping, or being told you stop breathing at night
- •Excessive daytime sleepiness or difficulty staying awake
- •Morning headaches
- •Difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or mental fog
- •Mood instability, irritability, or depression that doesn't fully respond to treatment
- •Anxiety that's worse in the morning or hard to settle at night
- •Frequent nighttime waking or restless sleep
If several of these resonate, it's worth investigating — sleep disorders are treatable, and treatment often produces dramatic improvements in how you feel and function.
The Process
What an At-Home Sleep Study at Neurolimits Looks Like
Consultation
You'll meet with a clinician who reviews your symptoms, sleep history, and daytime functioning. We'll determine whether an at-home sleep study is the right next step — or whether a different kind of assessment would be more informative.
Device Pickup + Setup Instructions
You'll pick up a compact monitoring device from our office. We'll walk you through exactly how to use it — it's simpler than it sounds. The device typically records breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate, and sleep position.
Sleep at Home
Sleep in your own bed, in your normal environment. The device records data throughout the night. Most studies are one night, though some situations call for two nights of recording.
Return + Results
Return the device to our office. A board-certified sleep specialist reviews and interprets your data. You'll receive your results and a clear explanation of what they mean — not just a number, but context about how your sleep is affecting your health and functioning.
Follow-Up Care
If sleep apnea or another disorder is identified, we'll coordinate next steps — which may include treatment recommendations, referral to a specialist, or integrated care that addresses both sleep and the mental health challenges it's affecting.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. At-home sleep studies are highly effective at detecting obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is the most common sleep-breathing disorder. For more complex sleep disorders (such as central sleep apnea or REM sleep behavior disorder), an in-lab polysomnogram may be recommended instead.
For detecting obstructive sleep apnea, at-home sleep studies are considered comparably accurate to in-lab testing for most people. They may be less appropriate for certain situations — your clinician will discuss which is right for you.
A normal sleep study rules out sleep apnea — but it doesn't explain everything. Poor sleep quality can stem from other causes including anxiety, poor sleep habits, circadian rhythm issues, or other conditions. We integrate sleep study results with your full clinical picture, so a 'normal' result isn't a dead end — it's information.
At-home sleep studies are covered by many insurance plans, especially when there's clinical indication. Coverage varies — we'll help clarify your situation before you commit to testing.
Sleep apnea causes repeated micro-arousals throughout the night as you briefly stop breathing, disrupting the deep restorative stages of sleep. Over time, this can impair memory, attention, mood regulation, and executive function — and is increasingly linked to long-term cognitive risk. Treating sleep apnea often produces significant improvements in mental clarity, energy, and mood.
